Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi as the 18th BRICS Summit commenced under India’s leadership. The summit signifies a pivotal moment in international diplomacy, showcasing India’s commitment to fostering multilateral cooperation among emerging economies.
The backdrop of this significant gathering included the iconic Ramanathaswamy Temple in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu, reinforcing India’s cultural heritage during the welcome of BRICS leaders. This visual representation blends tradition and modern diplomacy.
On Friday, PM Modi engaged in a series of high-level diplomatic discussions. He held separate talks with both President Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, while also meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. His address at the BRICS Business Forum underscored the importance of business collaboration among member nations.
The meeting with President Putin marks the second official interaction between the two leaders within this year, following their earlier engagement at the 26th SCO Summit held in Bishkek in August. These discussions exemplify the strengthening of Indo-Russian ties.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reported that during their discussions, the leaders evaluated ongoing cooperation in various sectors, including political, economic, defence, energy, and space domains. They also discussed enhancing skill mobility and promoting people-to-people connectivity.
Key topics on the agenda included the ramifications of India’s leadership role as BRICS chair and the evolving India-Russia relationship in the multilateral arena. The discussions also touched upon critical regional conflicts, notably in West Asia and the Black Sea region, reflecting the global dynamics affecting both nations.
In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, the BRICS nations are poised to issue a joint statement during the summit, highlighting the success of consensus-building efforts. After rigorous negotiations extending into the early hours of Saturday, the participating countries reached an agreement on a joint statement.
India played a crucial role in orchestrating these negotiations, overcoming different perspectives to facilitate collective agreement among member states. This achievement illustrates India’s commitment to enhancing dialogue and collaboration within the BRICS framework.
