India officially upgraded its technical mission in Kabul to the status of a full-fledged embassy on Friday, as External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi in New Delhi. This advancement marks a milestone in India’s diplomatic engagement with Afghanistan, reflecting the country’s strategic interests and commitment to regional stability.
Following the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan in August 2021, India withdrew all officials from its embassy. However, in June 2022, a technical team returned to Kabul to oversee limited operations. The recent upgrade signifies India’s renewed focus on humanitarian aid, infrastructure development, and enhanced cooperation in regional security.
During the meeting, Jaishankar stated, “Your visit marks an important step in advancing our ties and affirming the enduring friendship between India and Afghanistan.” He emphasized India’s deep-rooted interest in the development and prosperity of the Afghan people, underscoring the historical and cultural links between the two nations.
Jaishankar praised the Taliban-led government for its “sensitivity towards India’s security concerns,” particularly following the terror attack in Pahalgam that raised alarm bells in New Delhi. He stressed the collective responsibility shared by both nations to combat cross-border terrorism. “We must coordinate efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms and manifestations,” he asserted, highlighting a focal point of their discussions.
In response, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi acknowledged India as a significant regional player that has consistently supported the Afghan people. He expressed gratitude for India’s humanitarian aid and reiterated Kabul’s intent to broaden cooperation in various sectors, including trade, education, and infrastructure.
This upgrade in diplomatic status emerges as both a cautious and strategic re-engagement approach by New Delhi towards the Taliban government.
