Group Captain Ranjit Singh Sidhu, an esteemed fighter pilot of the Indian Air Force (IAF), has been awarded the prestigious Vir Chakra for gallantry in recognition of his courageous actions during Operation Sindoor in May. This operation, marked by intense military engagement, showcased Sidhu’s exceptional leadership and precision under fire.
According to the official citation from the Government Gazette on October 4, the commendation highlights his remarkable ability to execute multiple deep-penetration strike missions against well-fortified enemy positions while navigating complex threats and intricate air defences.
During the high-stakes four-day conflict between India and Pakistan, Group Captain Sidhu led his squadron’s operations utilizing advanced fighter aircraft. He successfully managed missions in hostile airspace, achieving all specified operational goals amidst formidable challenges.
The citation praises his exceptional acts of gallantry, resolute leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty. Sidhu exhibited remarkable bravery, placing mission objectives and the safety of fellow airmen above his personal safety.
As the commanding officer, he executed operations from three distinct locations along the crucial Western sector, taking direct control of missions and making dynamic, real-time decisions to counter ever-evolving threats. His strategic acumen and bold leadership ensured the success of their operations, reinforcing the IAF’s offensive posture.
Operation Sindoor emerged as a decisive event that showcased the meticulous planning and execution abilities within the IAF. The unit accomplished all assigned objectives, reinforcing national security during a tense period.
In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, which necessitated swift military action, the operation saw a remarkable response from the IAF, with nine pilots receiving the Vir Chakra. This recognition stands as India’s third-highest wartime gallantry award, shining a light on the valor displayed by the aerial unit.
Other notable recipients alongside Sidhu include Group Captains Manish Arora, Animesh Patni, and Kunal Kalra. The citation for Group Captain Arora particularly lauds his dynamic leadership as he successfully led an unescorted strike mission through heavily defended airspace, demonstrating pinpoint accuracy despite considerable radar and missile threats.
Furthermore, Squadron Leader Rizwan Malik has been acknowledged for his resolute valour and audacious manoeuvres that disoriented enemy formations, contributing significantly to the IAF’s tactical advantages during the operation.
This announcement comes in conjunction with the approval of a total of 127 gallantry awards and 40 distinguished service awards by President Droupadi Murmu, a gesture of appreciation on the eve of India’s 79th Independence Day. The recognition affirms the dedication and courage of the armed forces in protecting the sovereignty of the nation.
