In a remarkable achievement for neonatal care, the Department of Pediatrics at Government Medical College (GMC) Doda successfully managed and discharged a newborn weighing 6 kilograms at birth. This baby is one of the heaviest ever delivered at the institution.
The newborn arrived on October 25, 2025, at 1:20 PM, born to a diabetic mother. Shortly after birth, the infant developed severe respiratory distress within the first 30 minutes, prompting immediate admission to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for advanced management and monitoring.
Given the newborn’s large-for-gestational-age status and respiratory complications, specialists initiated neonatal respiratory support. Physicians closely monitored vital parameters such as respiratory effort, oxygen saturation, blood sugar levels, temperature, and neurological activity.
Over the following days, the infant responded positively to treatment, enabling medical staff to gradually reduce respiratory support. For the last 72 hours before discharge, the baby demonstrated stable independent breathing, normal oxygen levels, and effective temperature regulation. There were no instances of apnea, cyanosis, or desaturation.
Upon reaching sustained clinical stability, the newborn was discharged in good health, with routine follow-up care advised. The management of this challenging case reflects the expertise and dedication of the entire pediatrics team.
This success stems from the adept guidance of Dr. Najmus Saqib, Head of Pediatrics at GMC Doda, along with the support of faculty members Dr. Narinder Singh, Dr. Ghansham Singh Katoch, Dr. Niraj K. Gupta, and Dr. Satish Sharma. Their collaborative efforts, complemented by a dedicated team of senior and junior residents, greatly aided in the baby’s recovery.
The nursing and paramedical staff deserve special acknowledgment for their vigilant monitoring and compassionate care, which proved vital to the baby’s recovery. Their unwavering commitment reflects the high standards of neonatal care at GMC Doda.
This achievement underlines the growing expertise in neonatal care at GMC Doda. It signals the department’s enduring commitment to provide quality, evidence-based, and compassionate care to newborns and children in the region. As healthcare professionals celebrate this milestone, it offers hope and reassurance for families in need of specialized neonatal care.
