Chief Secretary Atal Dulloo chaired a high-level meeting today to assess measures for the smooth transportation of fruit consignments from the Kashmir Valley to markets across India. This initiative addresses logistical challenges faced by local fruit growers, vital for Kashmir’s economy.
The meeting brought together key officials including the Divisional Commissioner of Kashmir, the Secretary of the Transport Department, and various other stakeholders vital to the transportation chain.
During the session, Dulloo evaluated the status of the Jammu–Srinagar National Highway (NH-44), which serves as a crucial route for fruit-laden vehicles. He sought updates regarding the movement of these trucks and the uninterrupted flow of essential commodities transiting into Kashmir.
Emphasizing the significance of agricultural produce, he ordered that no fruit truck should remain stranded on the highway and directed concerned departments to prioritize safe passage for these vehicles. Furthermore, he critically reviewed the backlog of vehicles stranded on NH-44 and ordered prompt clearance actions.
The Chief Secretary also explored alternatives for long-distance transportation, advising the Divisional Commissioner to approach the Divisional Railway Manager (DRM), Jammu to investigate the feasibility of introducing rail freight services. This initiative aims to facilitate the movement of horticultural produce to major markets in Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bengaluru.
In response to Dulloo’s inquiries, the Divisional Commissioner assured that adequate transportation options are presently accessible at competitive rates and reported that local fruit growers do not encounter significant logistical obstacles.
Secretary of the Transport Department, Avny Lavasa, noted that in the event of a transport vehicle shortage, the J&K SRTC fleet would be mobilized to guarantee the smooth evacuation of fruits from the Valley to external markets. This commitment further reinforces the administration’s support for local farmers.
During the meeting, Dulloo reiterated the government’s dedication to ensuring hassle-free transportation of horticultural produce, a crucial aspect of Kashmir’s economy. He instructed all stakeholders to maintain rigorous coordination and be proactive in facilitating the smooth movement of fruit consignments throughout the current harvest season.
As the agricultural sector plays a pivotal role in the livelihoods of many in the region, these measures underscore the administration’s commitment to supporting farmers and enhancing the efficiency of the fruit supply chain.
