COIMBATORE — Rithanya Sivaram, a Class 12 student at The Indian Public School, has launched Vibrance Hub, a platform designed to integrate project-based learning with wellbeing support. This innovative initiative addresses a crucial gap as India prepares its students for an AI-dominated future, where creativity and sustained innovation take precedence over rote knowledge.
“In the age of AI, information is commoditized. What matters now is what you can make, how you think, and whether you can sustain creative work over time,” Sivaram states. She emphasizes that while Atal Tinkering Labs equip students with tools and spaces for innovation, Vibrance Hub provides the essential scaffolding, community support, and wellbeing practices necessary to transform students’ interests into sustained creative endeavors.
Vibrance Hub builds on MIT’s Lifelong Kindergarten framework—comprising Passion, Projects, Peers, and Play—highlighting that maker education transcends mere construction. It focuses on developing essential skills like computational thinking, resilience through iteration, and collaborative abilities—all attributes that no AI will replicate.
Typically, children approach problems with fearless experimentation. However, standardized testing and a culture that rewards “correct answers” slowly erode that invaluable confidence. Students often grow cautious, self-critical, and hesitant to attempt anything new without a guarantee of success. The innate creativity that previously flowed freely becomes buried beneath layers of practicality and perfectionism, leading individuals to believe they are simply “not creative people” anymore.
Vibrance Hub symbolizes a return to traditional Indian educational values. Historically, prior to Macaulay’s infamous Minute on Education in February 1835, Indian education emphasized hands-on learning as part of the gurukul tradition. This educational philosophy revolved around active creation and problem-solving rather than passively consuming knowledge, where students learned metallurgy by forging, astronomy by stargazing, and medicine through practice.
The National Education Policy 2020 underscores the necessity of reviving this maker-centric approach, asserting that the fertile grounds for India’s future prosperity lie in nurturing creators and innovators, not merely information repeaters.
The Atal Innovation Mission (AIM), initiated in 2016 by NITI Aayog, represents India’s most ambitious effort to implement the maker-centric philosophy on a national scale. AIM seeks to materialize the NEP 2020 vision by fostering creativity and innovation through creating robust infrastructures that promote hands-on learning across the country.
