Satish Sharma Urges Union Support for Jammu & Kashmir Sports

The Minister for Youth Services and Sports, Satish Sharma, met with Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports, Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, in New Delhi today to discuss critical improvements needed in Jammu and Kashmir’s sports infrastructure and youth development initiatives. This meeting seeks to transform J&K into a vibrant sports hub.

Sharma presented a comprehensive memorandum emphasizing the J&K Government’s ambitions to enhance athletic excellence and youth engagement in the region. The proposals align with the national strategy toward sports, particularly the National Sports Policy 2025 and the J&K Sports Policy 2022.

In his discussions, Sharma highlighted several primary needs for sports development. He requested support from the Union Government to fast-track projects including the establishment of the National Winter Sports Centre of Excellence at Gulmarg and the modernization of district stadiums to incorporate all-weather sports facilities. Additionally, Sharma advocated for sports amenities at the panchayat level to provide equitable access to impoverished rural youth.

Sharma illustrated the importance of grassroots participation in sports by urging the expansion of Khelo India programs. He also recommended augmenting scholarships and financial aid available for athletes, integrating sports science and physiotherapy into training regimens, and promoting public-private partnerships (PPP) to manage sports infrastructure efficiently.

Moreover, he proposed the launch of international winter sports events in Gulmarg to stimulate not only sports engagement but also sports-linked tourism. This initiative aims to position Jammu & Kashmir prominently as a destination for winter and adventure sports on the global stage.

Addressing the financial aspects, Sharma requested the early release of ₹103.82 crore under the Khelo India initiative. This funding is essential for completing critical sports infrastructure projects that support youth talent development in the region.

Responding positively to Sharma’s requests, Union Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya committed to framing a dedicated policy for promoting rural sports. He assured that provisions for sports equipment funding will soon be available to support ongoing and future sports initiatives in Jammu and Kashmir.

The collaboration between the J&K government and the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports signals a strengthened commitment to nurture sports talent, encourage youth participation, and ultimately uplift the region’s youth through enhanced sports infrastructure and opportunities.
